Role of company/organisation

Camfil's business is to provide customers with sustainable best-in-class air filtration products and services through four main business units: Filters, Power Systems, Air Pollution Control (APC) and Airborne Molecular Contamination (AMC). Camfil is able to make complete Life Cycle Cost calculations (Total costs of ownership) with our own powerful software. With these calculations Camfil can help select the most sustainable air filtration solution for the specific situation, without lowering the overall air quality which is wanted by the end-user. We are able to lower the energy costs on avarage with 10 to 20% (regarding HVAC Installations) just by installing the right type of airfilter with an optimal pressure drop. Furthermore we have developed a sustainable bagfilter with an FSC-labeled frame.

Air filters are responsible for about 15% of the total costs in an HVAC installation. 70% of the costs are being generated by energy costs. What would happen if we are able to lower the energy costs by installing a better, more sustainable air filter without lowering the indoor air quality? An air filter is the easiest part to exchange in an HVAC installation. A new, more sustainable, air filter can be installed in the existing frame. This means that we are able to lower the Life Cycle Costs of the installation without installing any other parts then the air filter itself. In addition to the above we have developed an air filter which is made from FSC-labeled wood. This filter is being used in Europe for more than 3 years now in installations at Hospitals, offices, governments, cleanrooms and heavy industries for example, and has proven its vallue. Our CFSS (Camfil Farr Solution System) software is designed by our own R&D department for one reason: Lowering the LCC without lowering the indoor air quality. With this software we can advise on the most sustainable air filter solutions, if wanted per HVAC installation / per building. We are able to show a couple of parameters: - Total costs per installation per year - Energy consumption per year, per HVAC installation - IAQ (indoor air quality), efficiency of the air filter - CO2 emmisions per year - Pressuredrop curve regarding the filters We are able to show the above aspects for the current situation and compare this with a possible alternative solution. All information is being showed in graphs and is comparable quite easy.

Camfil has introduced this new, sustainable, air filter in the Dutch market in 2011. Energy savings are becomming more and more important in our branche. We have numerous case studies available, but the case study about the Radboud University and Radboud UMC is a very good reference. In this case we managed to reduce the different types of air filters from around 100 to 20 different types, we have lowered the total operational costs with 7% (not only energy savings but also savings in labor costs, initial filter costs and so on). Step in the right direction

By using a sustainable air filter we are able to save a fair amount of energy and are also able to expand the lifetime of this air filter (less materials are needed). Our FSC-label is one of the most important factors in this situation to show that our sollution does not have an irreversible impact on the environment.

Good investment

Based on experience and reference projects in the Netherlands we are able to tell that the payback period is around 3 to 6 months. On avarage an air filter needs to be exchanged every year, sometimes even twice a year. If wanted we can provide sustainable air filters for one the HVAC installations without costs to show the benefits for you in practice.
