 +Green and the city The heavily urbanized downtown area of the Municipality of Eindhoven looks gray: there are many buildings and little to no green. The tall buildings, paved roads and square reflect and absorb sunlight. This process is known as the urban heat island effect: it causes significantly higher temperatures than its surrounding areas on summer days Tauw has developed a model to make this effect visible. Insight in heat island locations can help to take effective measures to increase the quality of life in the city. Included in the annex is the map Tauw produced of the “Heat Stress” in Eindhoven. This problem can easily be solved by taking the following measures: - Changing the Stadhuisplein into a park will create a cool oasis in the city center in the vicinity of the shopping area. The park will be landscaped with many different types of greenery and a variety of Dutch trees such as willow, oak and beech. As a shrub layer is also important for the green character of the park, both a herb layer and a shrub layer will be realized. - Creating differences in height in the park will result in an attractive place to relax. A children’s playground will be constructed from natural materials only. Specially designed fences will separate the park from the road which will provide more security for the children. - The buildings in the center of Eindhoven consist mainly of concrete. By implementing ecological measures in the renovation plans of the buildings, the urban ecology will also be stimulated. By realizing green walls and roofs, the buildings will also get a sustainable image. The green atmosphere in the city center provides a relaxing and positive image to the people and will provide shadow and coolness. Measures to stimulate fauna in the area are also implemented. The facades of buildings are suitable for nesting boxes and abodes for bats. The neighboring area will be landscaped so as to make sure the nesting boxes and abodes will be occupied. Consider some rows of trees, berry-bearing shrubs, flight route, food and shelter. The ecological measures contribute to a green image of the City of Eindhoven and provide added value for tenants, buyers or investors of municipal buildings.

 +===== Stage of development=====
 +
 +Proven innovation: it has been used in practice on a small scale.
 +
 +===== Substantiation stage of development=====
 +
 +From 2010 onwards Tauw is being asked as a specialist to prepare plans for different ecological measurements for flora and fauna for the purpose of BREEAM-NL certification in urban areas. Dozens of these plans are have already been implemented.
 +
 +===== Provability contribution to sustainability=====
 +
 +Proven contribution to sustainability; this has been shown in practice.
 +
 +===== Step in the right direction=====
 +
 +The green atmosphere in the city center provides a relaxing and positive image to the people and will provide shadow and coolness. The ecological measures will stimulate urban ecology.
 +
 +===== Flexible idea=====
 +
 +This idea is flexible because the appropriate measures will be determined in consultation with the principal, the developer and the contractor. The ecological measures do not have an irreversible impact on the environment.
 +
 +===== Good investment=====
 +
 +The ecological measures contribute to a green image of the city of Eindhoven and provides added value for tenants, buyers or investors of municipal buildings. The green atmosphere in the city center provides a relaxing and positive image to the people and will provide shadow and coolness.
