Due to the broad spectrum of expertise within our organization, we are able to: • Think conceptually and innovatively; • Integrate and visualize (technical) ideas into spatial concepts and concrete projects; • Organize meetings and workshops with collaborating partners; • Visualize complex processes as well as the spatial challenges; • Process innovative concepts into executable plans. • Bring stakeholders together and activate them to collaborate. ===== Opportunities for collaboration===== A spatial designer has been trained to collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams. The collaboration leads to a final product – being a building, a part of public space (e.g. square street) or a landscape design -, in which sustainability and preparing the city and its surroundings for climate change, are key elements. It is the greatest challenge to be able to fine tune an idea in all its detail, without losing track of the collaboratively defined concept. That demands a high degree of social skill, flexibility and sheer determination. Our ability to visualize ideas rapidly into schemes, illustrations and impressions stimulates the senses and the debate. It is our strengths to combine engineering skills regarding sustainable processes with a thorough understanding of space and human interaction. ===== Description of idea===== <WRAP box right minwidth:33%> <userpoll Rating> + ****** + **** + ** </userpoll> <WRAP centeralign> Please rate this idea! \\ Click on **Vote and view** to see the results. </WRAP> </WRAP> Eindhoven flows The urban tissue should be able to effortlessly process the metabolism of energy flows, waste flows, water circulation, food circulation, mobility, human traffic, and change of functions, based on the newest technology, in order to implement the targets that have been defined in the various policy documents. The construction or replacement of the infrastructure for these various flows is very expensive, hence limiting the transformation towards an energy neutral, sustainable and (most importantly) flexible city. The same goes for public space, which houses a large variety of functions. The hidden, underground infrastructure is often leading limiting the development opportunities above ground; ultimately slowing down fast innovation and transformation. We propose a new flexible network, in which all underground flows are combined into a single flexible smart grid. The grid has the ability to connect all flows in the city. The above ground network in the public space, will be designed in such way, that it seamlessly integrates all functions and flows in the city. Also on the scale of the individual building, the shell and the internal flows have to function separately. The shell houses the grid of installations and networks, whereas the metabolism of the building is combined into a separate independent module, which can change due to coming innovations. The building flows… Buildings need to be transformed from an energy consuming and waste producing entity into a healthy and contributing component. A building should produce energy, clean air, clean water, as well as food and biodiversity. We want to achieve this by adding a multifunctional volume to existing buildings, which serves the following purposes: A. Activation of roof surface for air ventilation, heating, biodiversity, water storage and energy production. B. Adding a new space along the façade of the building, to combine air ventilation and network and flows. Metaphorically: The bark of a tree, which allows juices to flow from roots till the top. In the center of the tree you find only hard wood: the structure of the building. C. Activating the plinth of the building by adding a new shell to house new functions in line with: ‘Het Nieuwe Werken’ (alternative workplace practices). D. Connecting the flow of the building to the grid of the city: - Exchange flow of energy (business model) - Exchange flow of clean water, water storage as energy storage (business model) - Exchange flow of air (clean air, oxygen, CO2) - Exchange of nutrients from waste to food (business model) City hall square flows… The different flows are distributed through the urban tissue in the public space. We introduce a new infrastructure, which effortlessly bundles and unbundles flows of resources. Bringing back surface water in the center of Eindhoven, belongs to the possibilities. By revitalizing the old water system, we can restore flows of water, air and biodiversity. This idea can be found in several policy documents. However, by adding a new flexible smart grid to this idea, we add value to the sustainable city. ^ Illustrating file|{{public:outline_proposals:subdata:proposals:illustrations:384-q24-eindhoven_flows_plan_s.pdf?400&direct|EINDHOVEN FLOWS PLAN S.pdf}}| ^ Type of idea|combination of product and service| ^ Category of idea|technical; design; work flow| ^ Enabling conditions|Collaboration with stakeholders, by activating them, and making them enthusiastic to be part of the solution, rather than part of a problem, is typical for our organization. Therefore defining and incorporating the stakeholders is one of the key necessities in our vision. By having us ‘on-board’ in the strategic team, the city of Eindhoven ensures this quality becomes available.| ===== Stage of development===== Speculative innovation: it has not yet been used in practice because it is in an idea stage and will need more development. ===== Substantiation stage of development===== We have defined the idea to combine existing and future technology into a new concept, both flexible and sustainable towards the future. It is not possible to realize that idea at once. The process is equally important. That also proves why flexibility in our plan is so important. In order to achieve that, we offer our knowledge and skills to contribute to the process needed to activate the stakeholders. We care to define the following process steps: - Define a point on the horizon: Powerful concept carried by stakeholders - Harvest the ‘low hanging fruit’ (easy achievements first) - Work out the innovative ideas into a trial / pilot project together with stakeholders - Step by step deployment of the plans ===== Provability contribution to sustainability===== Speculative contribution to sustainability; evidence of possible contributions is only indicatively and will still have to be determined through research or in practice. (Speculatieve bijdrage aan duurzaamheidsambities; dit is alleen indicatief aan te gev ===== Step in the right direction===== A new way of stimulating the use of the public space is realized. The public space is ultimately for all, and used by all. New opportunities come about. Leisure will be possible, in places that are unused as of yet. That will stimulate new commercial use and social safety in the public space. That will stimulate a better climate for living and working. This is a positive spiral, which can be stimulated by introducing the smart grid, that combines the upgrade of the quality of the public space with the more flexible arrangement of the infrastructure of flows of resources. ===== Flexible idea===== The community is invited to use the city and its urban spaces in new ways. In our vision we only create the framework to make it happen. The city is a palimpsest; and especially the layered quality of the city must be activated. That will make the sustainable city, because it stimulates instead of regulates. Hence, creativity of community and business is stimulated to use the city again as a place of leisure or otherwise. The reversibility of the separation of living and working will be undone. Cities become more attractive. Besides of that aspect, our vision addresses the topic of reducing fossil fuels and replacing them by renewable resources in the smart grid. ===== Good investment===== The community is invited to use the city and its urban spaces in new ways.
