Our services include inspiration sessions, presentations, workshops, project support and specialist consulting for the following key focus areas: Government, Built Environment, Education and Business Innovation // ^ Address|Innovatoren 6-A, Sint Jansweg 15, 5928 RC, Venlo, Netherlands | ^ URL|www.c2cexpolab.eu | ^ Contact|Bas van de Westerlo, Specialty advisor built environment & Cradle to Cradle certified Consultant, <[email protected]> | ^ Line of industry|Consulting and Design services | ^ Area of expertise|Construction; Sustainability | ^ Size|1-10 employees | ===== Role of company/organisation===== C2C ExpoLAB works across disciplines as part of the design team. In our approach we always seeks to the connection with the mission, vision and ambitions of the municipality of Eindhoven. We continuously inspire and seduce partners in the project to go beyond the traditional approach of ‘problem solving’ and minimizing negative impacts. By providing input to documents and plans we integrate the principles of sustainable innovation as an integral part of the entire plan. C2C ExpoLAB has a wealth of experience in taking the principles of sustainable innovation into practice. We are, therefore, in a position to offer unparalleled support to organizations ensuring the principles of sustainable innovation are effectively maximized from start to finish. ===== Opportunities for collaboration===== In this project we see a great opportunity to challenge the market to come up with innovative, sustainable solutions. Not only partners in the project will be inspired and seduced to start innovation according The Natural Step, but also (local) companies and organizations are encouraged to start innovating. By doing so, the municipality can really show that Eindhoven is really the most innovative and smartest city in the world! ===== Description of idea===== <WRAP box right minwidth:33%> <userpoll Rating> + ****** + **** + ** </userpoll> <WRAP centeralign> Please rate this idea! \\ Click on **Vote and view** to see the results. </WRAP> </WRAP> Nature works according continuous material cycles, waste does not excist. This cyclic, biological system has provided a thriving planet with a wide variety of food and abundance for millions of years. Everything was part of it. The balanced natural system of raw materials has changed. Raw materials are extracted from the earth and concentrated, altered and eventually synthesized into limitless amounts of waste. With this process, valuable resources are lost. The decline of stocks and raw materials at world level is alarming. According to estimates by the European Commission (2010), the demand for raw materials will be tripled in the next twenty years! The amount of waste has risen sharply in recent decades. That is disturbing, but the amount of waste and the space it occupies is not the biggest problem of the cradle-to-grave designs. A much greater concern are the dirty, wasted or lost materials. A more cradle-to-cradle approach divides materials flows in two cycles: a biological and technological cycle. Recent researches showed a financial potential of 350-650 billion euro / year for the European industry (McKinsey). For the Netherlands this is approximately 7.3 billion euro / year. Beside, a circular economy creates jobs and contributes to the ambitions of CO2-reductions (TNO). The idea is simple: if you want to reuse materials in continuous cycles without loss of quality, it succeeds only if the quality is well defined from the beginning. After all, if it is unknown what is in the product, you do not know what comes out at the end of the use time. A material passport gives insight into the quality and content of products and gives direction to the consultations with suppliers. Material passports define not only the quality of materials, but also the preferred use, reusability, defines reverse logistics; taking into account the maintenance and use. By doing so, Eindhoven, worlds smartest city of the world, encourages the market for innovation to make a leap forward towards continuous materials cycles without the loss of quality. This idea contributes to the ambition of Eindhoven to become a sustainable city. Beside, this idea fits seamlessly with the four principles of The Natural Step. Also, this idea and approach help realizing the ambitions in the preliminary scope of the project. ^ Type of idea|combination of product and service| ^ Category of idea|technical; design| ^ Enabling conditions|To work efficient and effective with material pasports, a condition is that for all new materials the passport is used. Beside, that for the excisting materials an inventory is carried out to reuse current materials in the rehabilition of the projects. We recommend to indicate explicity in a disclaimer why and what for the material passports are used, what to do with the IP of the companies, how the data is saved, etc.| ===== Stage of development===== Underpinned innovation: it has not been used in practice yet but it is well underpinned. ===== Substantiation stage of development===== C2C ExpoLAB recently developed a vision for the use of materials in continuous cycles for a area development. The vision will be used as guideline for the market consultations, tenders, design, and selection of materials. In the current phase, the material passports are filled out by suppliers and producers. For a tender process of a furnishing concept, we used criteria out of the material passports in tender documents. Based on the criteria we were able to select materials and solutions that contribute to the ambitions, and that are safe and healthy for humans and the environment. As a result of the tender, the client can now return the products after a use period of 10 years and receive guaranteed 18% of the investment. ===== Provability contribution to sustainability===== Speculative contribution to sustainability; evidence of possible contributions is only indicatively and will still have to be determined through research or in practice. (Speculatieve bijdrage aan duurzaamheidsambities; dit is alleen indicatief aan te gev ===== Step in the right direction===== Eindhoven is implementing sustainability according The Natural Step. Therefore, it is important to not deplete the soil and don’t use harmful chemicals. The material passports can be customized in line with the criteria that are important for the context. Material passports are an important step towards circular systems, without the loss of quality. ===== Flexible idea===== It is possible to create material passports for the specific context of the project and even for every single building if necessary. Our work is grounded in the Cradle to Cradle philosophy. We are doing things good, rather than less bad. With an eco-effective approach we work towards a positive footprint. It rejects the idea that growth is detrimental to environmental health; after all, in nature growth is good. Instead, it promotes the idea that good design supports a rich human experience with all the entails – fun, beauty, enjoyment, inspiration and poetry, and still encourages environmental health and abundance. ===== Good investment===== Material passports take social, ecological and economical criteria into account. For example, what are the benefits of a material for humans? Does the product have beneficial effects on the environment? And what are arrangements for the reverse logistics and residual value? In different project this resulted in economic benefits. For example, as a result of a public tender for the furnishing concept of a office development a percentage of guaranteed 18% came out. Beside a positive Total Cost of Ownership, the client will have materials that are healthy and safe. ===== Comments===== C2C ExpoLAB is involved in the INTERREG IV-B program C2C BIZZ. The leading knowedge platform C2C-Centre is developed by C2C ExpoLAB as an investment of the project C2C BIZZ. Based on the information on the platform, we can make use of the knowledge and experiences free of charge.
