Role of company/organisation

We can support the engineering, realization and service phases of sustainable climate control in buildings, specifically heat and cold generation and distribution. Our team has decades of experience in this field. Our organization has successfully combined practical knowledge of installations in commercial buildings with the ability to create innovative products that fit the requirements of this market. This has resulted in market leadership in single well ATES (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage) systems. Our organization consists of companies with several disciplines: • GeoComfort (ATES systems) • Reduses (Gas engine heatpumps) • Insted (Maintenance, Energy management) • Installect (engineering) Our organization is familiar with working in construction teams and has experience in engineering, realizing and maintaining energy systems for public buildings.

Our added value consists of the combination of both practical and conceptual knowledge to provide durable performance of energy installations. This performance is measured in terms of comfort, energy consumption, cost and reliability. Our assignment is approached as part of a process, a chain. We can collaborate with partners in each phase, from conceptualization to realization and energy management. We have experience in collaborating with both installations companies like Imtech and Unica and advisory companies such as RoyalHaskoningDHV and Huisman van Muijen.

We support the Municipality of Eindhoven in taking the natural step in order to achieve a good world. From practical experience, we understand what it takes to transition the existing and create the new. The natural step our idea focuses on is climate control in buildings (e.g. heating and cooling) because this takes up almost half of the urban energy consumption. Our idea consists of a combination of new, existing and transitioning technology, brought together in a feasible and proven concept that allows expanding on in the future. This will allow the city of Eindhoven to reduce the energy required for the heating and cooling of City Hall Tower by approximately 75%. Our proposal consists of: • Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) • Gas engine heatpump ATES ATES is a well-known and proven system for sustainable climate control in buildings. The soil in Eindhoven is well suited to support this technology and when using our patented single well solution, of which we have realized hundreds throughout The Netherlands, there is little or no risk of interference with other ATES systems in the city. Reduses Gas Engine heat pump (GW) Heat pump technology has become a widely used solution in the transition to sustainable climate control. The innovation that we propose to use is a heat pump made by Reduses, which uses a gas engine instead of an electrical engine. The reasons to choose this machine are: • More heat production • Higher temperature capacity • Smaller ATES system selection as a result • Ability to use heat for central heating • Ability to use heat for hot tap water • Smaller capacity of electricity grid connection • Lower investment in replacing release installations The current version of the GW is a new, but proven, technology that realizes these added values and supports maximum energy efficiency with currently available technologies. As innovation and development continues, we foresee a version of the GW that can not only produce heating and cooling, but also electricity (the GW-E), by taking in green gas or biogas. In our proposed strategy, this allows maximum room for transition and creation, whilst choosing feasible and proven technology. Thus, Eindhoven can make the transition to a sustainable city and take the crucial step that lies between the old world and the new. This is governance in transition: a high level strategy that supports realistic operational measures. The proposed innovation can be made visible by planting a live monitoring screen in the reception area of the City Hall Tower. At city level, the technology of the Reduses gas engine heat pump is a valuable tool to prevent unnecessary investments in the electricity grid, whilst the energy sector is in transition. It allows for growth of solar energy and at the same time makes room for green gas and biogas to replace the current natural gas on the road to becoming energy neutral.

Enabling conditionsWe know about heating and cooling and hydraulics. We can supply concepts, products and support in this field. To enable successful implementation we would need to cooperate with installation and construction partners that have the same mindset: to supply true value to the end users. Should the GW-E be ready for implementation by 2017, the consent of the municipality of Eindhoven to apply this technology would also be required.

The GW is a live product that has been installed in some ground-breaking projects, for instance: • Retrofit of ARAG Leusden: F to A label, combined with ATES; • Retrofit of Blaricum Hospital: 75% energy reduction; • Lesscher IT: simultaneous cooling of datacentre and heating of headquarters; • Ahoy Rotterdam: heating and cooling, combined with ATES; The GW is a large heat pump (200, 300 or 400 kW) that generates heating and cooling, powered by a Volkswagen gas engine. The GW-E produces heating, cooling and electricity, powered by a Wankel engine, allowing it to take in other fuels such as biogas. The GW-E is currently in R&D (prototyping) phase.

Step in the right direction

The smart route to sustainable municipal buildings, in our view, runs through the fields of feasibility on the right and creativity on the left. Reaching the goal (energy-neutral in 2045) requires taking measures and actions that have concrete results and offer potential for the future. This requires reducing energy consumption on the one hand and increasing sustainable energy production on the other. Our idea offers both these elements, combined with a realistic approach. In short: creative, yet feasible, sustainability.

Good investment

Financially When retrofitting an existing building, choosing our suggested ATES/GW solutions earns itself back in 5 to 10 years, when compared to conventional technology. Societally Our solution prevents heavy investment in energy infrastructure by using that infrastructure optimally. This is valuable, certainly during the energy transition. For example: choosing a GW prevents (semi) public investments to increase infrastructure capacity on the short term, when, with growing solar energy, decreased required capacity is foreseeable on the long term. Moreover, the development of the GW has partly taken place in Eindhoven (VDL) and being a Dutch product, supports the Dutch economy and employment.
